The following budget/cost of attendance presents typical direct and indirect expenses for an Amherst student for the 2022-2023 academic year. This budget is used by the Office of Financial Aid to calculate financial need and to determine financial aid eligibility and corresponding financial aid awards.

Student Expense Budget 2022-2023

Comprehensive Fee (tuition, room, and board) $ 80,250
Other Student Fees $ 600
Health Insurance* (waivable) $ 2,759
Books and Supplies (estimated) $ 1,000
Personal Expenses (estimated) $ 1,800
Travel/Transportation ** (varies by location) $ 50 - 2,500
Total Cost of Attendance 86,459 - $ 88,909

*Amherst College requires that all students participate in the College's health insurance plan or have comparable medical insurance. All students are billed this amount. Students not covered by family insurance and receiving financial aid, a Health Insurance Scholarship is available.

**Estimate of costs for transportation within the U.S.—usually two round-trips home—is included above. Please note that the transportation allowance does not mean the College will purchase a ticket for your travel costs. You must arrange for your travel and pay the costs yourself.

Books and supplies, personal and transportation expenses are not billed by the College; they are indirect expense estimates and are included in the cost of attendance on which financial aid eligibility is based.

The College annually evaluates its fees and makes adjustments when necessary. Financial aid awards will always be based on the fees in effect during the year of award.  Students who require financial aid because of changes in fees may apply for assistance in any academic year.

It should be noted that the comprehensive fee covers only a portion of your educational expenses at Amherst.  A year of education at the College actually costs approximately $113,000, but income from the College's endowment and from gifts and grants supplies the difference between that amount and the amount students are charged.
