Please review the following information regarding the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF), how to request these funds and how you can use them. These FAQs updated as of 10/14/2022.
What are the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF)?
The Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF) are a set of programs authorized under federal legislation to support the uncertainty and impacts of the coronavirus. The third in this series is called The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, also known as HEERF III.
I am an Amherst student. Am I eligible for HEERF III funds?
Eligibility is based on financial need. Federal HEERF funds are available regardless of citizenship status or eligibility for federal Title IV aid funds. The direct grants to students are intended to support students’ needs related to the student’s cost of attendance (COA) or for emergency costs that arise as a result of the coronavirus.
How do I request HEERF III funds?
The final round of HEERF III funds will be distributed during the Fall 2022 semester as block grant funds. Eligible students will be notified directly via their Amherst email address.
I received funds during a previous HEERF cycle. Can I apply again now?
No. Students may see changes in eligibility from the last HEERF cycles if they have had a decrease in siblings in college, an increase in family income or if they received the newly established Access Grant.
If I receive HEERF III funds, how can I use them?
The College will act as a conduit for these federal student funds. The direct grants to students are intended to support students’ needs related to the student’s cost of attendance at Amherst or for emergency costs that arise due to coronavirus.
When will I learn if my request is approved?
Block grant recipients will receive an email from the Office of Financial Aid on Friday, October 14, 2022.
What will be the amount of my grant?
HEERF III block grants for the final round will be $500.
If I am approved, when will I see the funds in my account?
The College will begin processing the block grant funds as students certify their eligibility. Finexio, the College’s payment provider, will deliver electronic payments two to three business days from processing. The first set of payments should arrive after October 21, 2022.
