The goal of this course is to develop the students’ practical abilities to stage vivid, moving, meaningful works of theatre. Combining Viewpoints techniques with an intercultural performancevocabulary, we will enhance the students’ knowledge of their body and voice as an instrument for creating both devised and text based work. Each class begins with preparing a ground work of physical exercises and warm ups that are designed to warm the body and understand the natural principles of movement, time and space on stage. We then move on to compositions, whereeach student will serve as a director, writer, designer, dramaturg, performer, etc. in the creation of new works. The class involves weekly scene work and critical analysis while seeking to engage in an intensive investigation into the art of directing. Texts will be chosen from a wide repertoire of national and international playwrights including Antonin Artaud, Amiri Baraka, Samuel Beckett, Alfred Jarry, Heiner Mueller, Suzan-Lori Parks, William Shakespeare, Gertrude Stein and Gao Xingjian. Compositions are site specific or performed in class and include specific criteria. Students are expected to dedicate significant outside rehearsal time to this class.
Requisites: One of the following--THDA 111, 112 or 113, or equivalent college-level experience with consent of the instructor. Fall semester. Visiting Asst. Professor Brathwaite.
