Description

(ENGL-12-01) A first course in the critical reading of selected major British and American poets. Attention will be given to prosody and poetic forms, and to different ways of reading poems. We will read poetry by William Shakespeare, John Donne, John Keats, Emily Dickinson, Wallace Stevens, Elizabeth Bishop, and Philip Larkin. Three class hours per week. Professor Chickering. (ENGL-12-02) A first course in the critical reading of twelve English, Irish, and American poets: Donne, Herbert, Milton, Pope, Wordsworth, Tennyson, Dickinson, Frost, Eliot, Bishop, Larkin, and Heaney. Attention will be given to the careers of the poets, as well as to individual poems. Both poems and poets will be read in the light of two principal contexts: (1) The cultural moments in which poets write their poems, and (2) The continuing history of poetic style, as each writer responds to his or her predecessors. There will be a final paper on a book published recently. Limited to 35 students. Professor Sofield. Spring semester.
