Chemical Inventory System
Amherst College maintains a Chemical Inventory System and we are required to do so per federal and state regulations. New chemicals must be added to the inventory upon their arrival, decremented/removed from the system when empty or disposed of as hazardous waste, or transferred within the system when chemicals are moved from one location to another. The inventory also serves a practical purpose for the various research laboratories on campus by providing online access to a list of all materials present on campus. This facilitates “borrowing” of materials required in small quantities, which reduces costs to individual laboratories and promotes safety by minimizing the amount of waste and potentially hazardous materials stored on campus. Always contact the lab you want to "borrow" from.
Amherst College utilizes the Vertere inventory system—an online database.
ACCESSING VERTERE
- You must have an account to gain access to Vertere.
- Please contact Dylan Donovan, the Chemical Laboratory Coordinator, ddonovan@amherst.edu , if you need to be set up for the first time or if you forgot your username and/or password.
NAVIGATING VERTERE
- Once you have logged in, select the “Chemical” tab, followed by “View/Update” on the left side of the screen. This will bring up the search screen. You may search for chemicals by name, CAS number, department, location, user (i.e., P.I.), tag (barcode) number, or any combination of these.
ADDING, DECREMENTING, TRANSFERRING A CHEMICAL
- The easiest way is to use the new Chemical Inventory Submission Form.
- The other option is to complete the paper form found within your lab. Completed sheets will be collected weekly by the department's safety personnel.
- When placing the bar code on a container, try not cover any important information.
- It's also a good idea to add the date received and later, the date opened.
